ADMISSIONIn June 1971, four young professionals joined the company, Adv. Hirba M. Naik Gaunekar, CA. Ganesh M. Daivajina, CA Uttam N. Bene, CA Sheila N. Mr. Volkar met to express concern about the huge gap between the need and availability of higher education opportunities for students in South Goa.
The imbalance was most pronounced in the area of commercial training. Students who could afford it traveled to cities like Mumbai, Pune, Belgaum and Panaji to pursue their degrees. Other disadvantaged young people obtained degrees in science/arts or did not pursue higher education. So they decided to establish a business college.
With the encouragement and support of Shri D. B. Wagh, Director, Center for Postgraduate Education and Research, Bombay University, Goa, they established Vidya Vikas Mandal, a non-profit organization dedicated to educational purposes.
Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics, the flagship institution of Vidya Vikas Mandal, has a rich history. Established as Vidya Vikas Mandal College of Commerce in 1973, the inauguration ceremony was held in June of the same year in the presence of His Excellency Shri S.K. Banerjee, Honorary Lieutenant Governor of Goa-Daman-Diu Union Territory. . The first Prime Minister Shri Dayanand Bandodkar.
Almost immediately after that, in June 1974, the College adopted the name Lord Sri Damodar as a token of gratitude to Mr. Sri Damodar Thornstan of Zambaulim, who had donated the land on which the College now stands. . Noted Cartoonist Hon`ble Shri R. K. Laxman was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
