This Institute was started in 1972 as a registered Society under the Andhra Pradesh (Telangana Area) Public Societies Act, 1350 Fasli (Act I of 1350F) in the name and style “Food Craft Institute (Hyderabad) Society”, Hyderabad. The government of India, Department of Tourism, New Delhi have upgraded this Institute in 1984 by introducing a 3 Year Diploma in Hotel Management and Catering Technology. Consequent on up gradation, the name of the Institute has been changed from “Food Craft Institute” to “Institute of Hotel Management Catering Technology and Applied Nutrition”. This Institute is functioning under the academic control of National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology, Noida, an Apex Body set up by the Department of Tourism, Government of India. Prior to the up gradation, only Craft Certificate Courses of Six months / One Year duration were conducted in the trades – Cookery, Bakery and Confectionery, Canning and Food Preservation, Restaurant and Counter Service, Hotel Reception and Book-keeping and House-Keeping including a Postgraduate Diploma Course in Tourism and Travel. The examination for these courses were then conducted by the State Board of Technical Education and Training, Government of Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad and Certificates awarded by them. Now the examinations for presently run courses are being conducted on all India basis by the National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology, Noida and the certificates are awarded by the Council directly. From the Academic Year 2002-03, the 3-Year Diploma in Hotel Management & Catering Technology was converted into 3-Year Bachelor of Science Programme in Hospitality & Hotel Administration (B.Sc. – HHA) and the certificates for the graduating students are being awarded by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi, in 2006-07.

Boys Hostel : IHM Hyderabad Facilities includes a campus girls hostel. The hostel gives accommodation to around 75 girls. The hostels are available for students of B.Sc Hospitality and Hotel Administration, 1st Sem. The IHM Hyderabad hostel for girls are allotted during the counselling process through an automated process on the basis of rank and reservation. The vacant seats are then filled through a first come first serve basis. The hostel is equipped with the basic facilities that include bed, fans, table and more.Both North Indian and South Indian are available at the Hostel.
Girls Hostel : The hostel accommodates a total of 170 boys. The Hostel at IHM Hyderabad for boys are allotted during the process of counselling based on the rank and reservation of the students. Students are provided all the facilities at the hostel including spacious rooms, table and chair, food that includes both North Indian and South Indian Food.
Sports : Along with the skills and study, the institute also takes care of the fitness of the students. The IHM Hyderabad facility includes various sports infrastructure that includes indoor and outdoor games, billiards table, yoga centre and gym. The campus also has a stress buster zone wherein students can relax and rejuvenate their mind to study in a relaxed setup.
Gym : The college has a Gym facility for the students.
Auditorium : The campus is equipped with an Auditorium wherein various programmes and get together, functions, and more takes place.

Admission at IHM Hyderabad is based on the merit of the students. Candidates meeting the eligibility criteria for the desired courses can apply for the IHM Hyderabad admission. Students who get shortlisted for the IHM Hyderabad admission can take courses at UG, Diploma and PG level. IHM Hyderabad admission is offered for courses like - B.Sc Hotel and Hospitality Administration at UG level while PG Diploma in Accommodation operation management, and M.Sc Hospitality Management at PG level . The admission at IHM Hyderabad for UG courses is based on merit wherein students must appear for NCHM JEE and appear for counselling. PG Diploma admission at IHM Hyderabad is done by the Institute itself based on the qualifying marks and interview marks.
