About Us

Government Arts College, Thiruvananthapuram, has a long and superb history. Initially a piece of H. H. The Maharaja's College, Thiruvananthapuram, it was isolated from the parent organization in 1924 (vide GO. R.O.C. No. 395 of 23 Legis, E dated 9lh May, 1924 given by the Government of H. H. The Maharaja of Travancore) to house the Arts Departments, and named H. H. The Maharaja's College of Arts. The parent school was named H. H. The Maharaja's College of Science. 


At the point when the new school opened on the fourth of July, 1924, the Departments of History, Economics, Sanskrit and Dravidian Languages and English were moved to it from the parent establishment. Praises courses in English, History and Economics were likewise led here around then. The Department of Philosophy was opened in 1925. After ten years, in 1935, the school began the Honors Course in Malayalam and the Post-graduate Course in Sanskrit the next year. 


With the establishing of the University of Travancore in 1937, the two schools were amalgamated into H.H. the Maharaja's University College, Trivandrum, and the Arts College at Thycaud worked as a piece of the University College. Freedom, in 1947, there was an endeavor to evaluate another arrangement of University Education, and as a piece of this trial, the Arts College was changed over into the University Previous School, In 1949, with the presentation of the Intermediate Course, the establishment came to be known as the University Intermediate College. In 1956, the Intermediate Course was halted and the organization by and by turned into a school instructing understudies for the University Previous Examination. 


In 1957-58, Pre-proficient courses were begun in this school, yet the Pre-designing course was halted a couple of years after the fact with the presentation of the multi year incorporated course in the Engineering College. The Pre-medicinal course continued for some additional time. In 1964-65, the two-year Pre-degree course was presented and with the death of the Kerala University Act, the administration of the school was taken over by the Government of Kerala. Later it was updated into a First Grade College and named Government Arts College with impact from the 28lh of July, 1971. 


Today, the Government Arts College offers degree courses in Economics, Commerce, biotechnology, and Physics. Post-graduate courses in English, Economics, Commerce and Analytical Chemistry. There are around 600 understudies joined up with the school and an aggregate of 70 individuals utilized here in educating just as in non-instructing positions.
