Hassan University came into existence to serve the underprivileged and economically backward section of students of Hassan and nearby districts. The University started as a Post Graduate Center of the University of Mysore in 1992 under the guidance of the then Vice-Chancellor Prof. M. Madayya with an allotment of 78.8 acres of land. The University of Mysore issued the notification on July 13th, 1992 to start the PG Centre of the University of Mysore in Hassan. The inauguration of Postgraduate Center at Hemagangothri, Hassan was inaugurated by then Hon’ble Governor of Karnataka and chancellor Shri Khurshid Alam Khan on 23rd January 1993 in the presence of Hon’ble Chief Minister of Karnataka Shri M. Veerappa Moily.
