About
The PhD program is a 60-credit, multi-conceptual and research-based degree program designed to produce top-quality hospitality and tourism educators and researchers. It not only focuses on preparing candidates to be excellent teachers at the university level but also engages them in conducting scholarly research in hospitality and tourism management. Upon graduation, students will be able to teach and research at the university level and work at the industry and research institutions. The Ph.D. program is highly competitive, seeking motivated individuals who are committed to pursuing academic and research careers in hospitality and tourism. The program is partly supported by the Ace Denken Co. Ltd. Endowment.
A critical component of the program is the faculty. The William F. Harrah College of Hospitality includes a faculty with both the research and practical experience in all facets of the hospitality and tourism industry. Faculty members regularly publish both scholarly and applied research articles and consult with the industry on operational problems and strategies.
The application deadline for all candidates is January 15 for fall admittance. The program is a fall entry-only program. All documentation and application materials must be submitted through the Graduate College’s online application system by the deadline.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
All domestic and international students must review and follow the Graduate College Admission and the Registration Requirements.
The candidate must satisfy the minimum admission requirements of the Graduate College and the William F. Harrah College of Hospitality. Applications are available on the UNLV Graduate Colleges website.
Candidates need to meet the following requirements below to be considered for the program.
Master’s degree
from an accredited institution with at least 24 credits in the hotel
administration, food service administration, tourism-convention administration,
or the closely aligned field. It is preferred that applicants have completed a
thesis-based master’s program.
An overall GPA
of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale for all the work completed at the post-baccalaureate
level.
A minimum of one
year of full-time work experience in the management/supervisory capacity in the
hospitality industry, or three years of full-time, front-line experience is
preferred.

post-secondary transcripts from all the institutions attended. Unofficial
copies of these transcripts must be uploaded into the online application

in order to be valid.
