AUTOMATION AND NETWORKING
The Post Graduate Diploma in Library
Automation and Networking (PGDLAN) aims at developing the professional
competencies of the library and the information professionals in an automated
and networked environment.
The programme also provides opportunities
for in-depth or intensive practical training to the enhance technical
skills of the learners to independently develop or manage a computerized
library and information centre.

Eligibility:
Any person who has passed BLISc or MLISc
can join the course. Working librarians
may join the course. Individuals working
in the library with more than ths five years of experience, but not having
professional degrees also may join the course. Similarly, any graduate intended
to have a career in Library and Information Sciences also may apply.
Course Timings
Classes and laboratory sessions will be
held only on Sundays from 9.30 am to 3.00 pm with half an hour lunch
break. Assignments have to be completed
during the weekdays.
Objectives of the Course
At the end of the course, the participants should be able to Approach computer-related routines with a greater level of confidence.
Access global electronic information with high precision in a cost-effective manner.
Initiate, improve and coordinate automation activities of the library Troubleshoot minor problems before the arrival of experts (This is like giving first aid in an emergency before the doctor arrives.)
Organize the global content as required by local needs with suitable value addition.
Talk sensibly with the computer personnel and state the users’ needs and assess their work.
Groom himself or herself to think globally and act locally with a new mindset.
Programme Objectives
The objectives of the Programme are to make the learners to:
Imbibe knowledge and skills associated with the fundamentals of computer technology;
Understand the basic requirements of the library automation and services provided by an automated library;
Get themselves acquainted with the components of a system;
Acquire knowledge and skills on networking and Internet technology in general and library and information networks in particular;
Develop Internet skills with special reference to the information resources available in the different forms and subjects;
Acquire web-based content development skills;
Be aware of the legal issues associated with electronic information.
Be able to design and develop the programme by enhancing skills on programming based on the specific language such as Java or Visual Basic or C++; and Undertake practical based project work in order to specialize in one of the thrust areas from which the learners will be able to the gain technological expertise and apply the same in the area of library automation and networking.
Post-Graduate Diploma in Library Automation and Networking ( PGDLAN ) is the proactive effort of Joshi-Bedekar College of Arts and Commerce to bridge the gap. It is an attempt to develop a group of technology-savvy librarians to take on new challenges.
Therefore, this initiative is aimed at the working librarians in and around the city of Mumbai and Thane
