A Doctor of Hearing Therapy, also known as an audiologist, is a healthcare professional who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of hearing and balance disorders. Audiologists work with patients of all ages, from infants to the elderly, and may collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as otolaryngologists (ear, nose, and throat doctors), speech-language pathologists, and educators, to provide comprehensive care.
Some of the conditions that audiologists may evaluate and treat include hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), balance disorders, and auditory processing disorders. They use a variety of tools and tests to assess a patient's hearing and balance function, including audiometry, otoacoustic emissions testing, and vestibular testing.
Once a diagnosis is made, an audiologist may recommend a range of treatments, such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, or assistive listening devices, to help improve a patient's hearing and communication abilities. They may also provide counseling and education to patients and their families on how to manage their condition and improve their quality of life.
